Lottie Life – June 2020

11th June – It’s raining today, I’m at the lottie, not achieving much but checking on the plant babies in the polytunnel aka sheltering from the rain… I do venture out from time to time and the thing I realise, everything is a little better with a hat. I might look like a tit but the rain is definitely less bothersome! So thanks go to PIC for reminding me to pick that up today and bring with!

13th June – A few tasks on the list for today. Weeding obviously, there is always weeding to do, Kalette protection and compost area creation. I’ve already filled up one of the site compost bins with weeds so I need nature to do what it does and create some space in that bin… whilst I’m waiting a new weed repository is required. It feels like a long day without achieving much today so I need to remind myself that it’s all progress. I’m also on film crew duty for the other half who is testing out some new machinery so that takes up a bit of time but makes a nice change to weeding 🙂 The star of the show is the Acer today… It’s popping 😍

14th June – Todays plan is getting some more plants into the ground. A little bit of weeding, but mainly ground prep, net erection and planting.

Peas – take 4… I think this is now the fourth lot of pea plants… whilst I seem to be really good at getting pea plants to germinate I’m way less successful at keeping them alive. To be fair, I think it’s mostly losing battles with the birds, so this time I’m armed with netting. I’ve also decided to put in a guide string for them to climb up rather than just planting them near canes… 🤞 this time I’ll keep them alive longer…

I’m also pleasantly surprised when I de-weed the Mange tout row thinking there would be bugger all left, like with the peas… but there are loads of plants doing really well. I add the new babies and feel less of a failure. The netting has protected them for the last few weeks so I’m even more hopeful the peas will also survive this time *does a little happy dance

I’ve used up all of the open beds so I’m moving onto a covered over area to plant out the cabbage and parsnips which have been growing in the polytunnel for the last few weeks. When I uncover it the ground isn’t too bad and I’m being let loose on the new husky cultivator (Husqvarna 129LK Combi Strimmer with a CA230 Cultivator attachment) to give the bed the once over before planting. I also dug out the more stubborn weeds with a hori hori… I’m loving this bit of kit, it makes getting the roots out a lot easier!!

I’ve planted cabbage and parsnips in the new bed. I’m taking no chances now and everything is getting protected from the birds, with either netting or mini bottle houses.

I’ve enjoyed today. I ache, but feel like I’ve actually achieved something… which isn’t always the case with Lottie Life.

22nd June – It’s been raining lots so not a lot has been going on at the lottie, visits to check the polytunnel and that’s about it. Obviously loads of weeding to do after the rainy season 😆. Its hot today… so of course its an opportune day to be in the sauna of a polytunnel repotting some plants who have out grown their current homes.

28th June – More weeding – obvs – but also exciting times…. Some of my plant babies are grown up and producing offspring. *does a happy dance – I shall soon have veggies.

As part of my weeding frenzy, I also ‘thinned out’ the carrots – aka pulled some up with the weeds in error – but they could probably do with some thinning so its not an issue. Aside from my fruit producing vegetable plants the star of the show are the Echinops today.

That pretty much brings us to the end of the month… Next, July!
