Let’s talk compost… So researching options for composting when you don’t have a great deal of outside space at home and I was reminded about wormeries. You can get special homes for them but with garden purchasing off the scale during pandemic times and few options available I looked at DIY options instead. The simplest option is a bucket type container with a lid (and lots of air holes) and as we’d just emptied chicken manure pellet tubs at the lottie, we had the perfect receptacle. I plan on creating a mansion for them at some point but for now their little starter home will have to do. So I sent away for some worms – special wormery worms not just any common or garden worms…
They seem pretty happy in their new home, I made them a coir and newspaper bed to keep them happy, just add veggie scraps and a spray of water from time to ☺️
Back to the lottie, the early winners are the runner beans, they show signs of life quickly and grow rapidly. I’ve de-weeded them and protected them from weeds by surrounding them with cut grass. Add poles for support…
A week or so later….. – I’ve been a bad Mamma! We’ve had some rainy / overcast / windy days here so I’ve not been visiting as much as before! It’s not as nice when it’s miserable 🤷♀️ I thought my little beauties would be ok with enough water from the rain but it turns out I was wrong! A few of the veggies have fallen victim of the cold / lack of sufficient watering, the runner beans suffering the worst. I’ll try my best to revive them but they are all looking very worse for wear. The courgettes which were finally making an appearance are also not doing great only one is still looking remotely alive…
Focussing on the positives rather than the things that aren’t doing so great… The lupins are thriving (can’t take credit for those – PIC’s) which give a much needed burst of colour on the duller days
I’ve also sowed some additional seeds indoors this time, plus some in the polytunnel to see if it makes a difference
